Community landcare began informally during the 1980s. Government support formalised in 1989, with the 1990s being declared the Decade of Landcare, and Landcare Australia was formed by the Federal Government in 1989. The objective of the Decade of Landcare was to halt the degradation of Australia's natural resources. It planned to do this by forming 2,000 community landcare groups by the year 2000.
